Fractals + Activities = Fractivities!
A fractal is a never ending pattern that looks similar as you “zoom” in and out. In other words, a fractal is a pattern made up of smaller versions of itself (click the link here for an introduction to fractals).
Exploring fractals can give students opportunities to integrate mathematics and art and help them see the beauty, wonder, and creativity in mathematics.
This website includes numerous hands-on fractivities you can try out in your math club. For example, students can make a fractal cutout card or learn how fractal patterns emerge in turbulence patterns, connecting mathematics to real-world experiences.
Another favorite activity is discussing Sierpinski’s Triangle and then having students color copies of the template attached, collecting them, and then building a large 3D version of Sierpinski’s Triangle to display.
