The RIOS Institute provides resources for STEM education and organization leaders to implement social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (SJEDI)-centered Open Education and Open Science pedagogy. As part of this work, the RIOS Institute has supported the development and facilitation of Learning Communities that engage faculty and leaders in collaborative learning and supported funding Working Groups that function as innovative sandboxes or think tank incubators. We are excited to share three opportunities to engage with RIOS, two learning communities and a call for proposals for working groups:
RIOS Learning Community: Exploring Implementation and Impacts of Open Pedagogy in the STEM classroom
Facilitators: Carlos Goller (NC State) and Melanie Lenahan (Raritan Valley Community College)
In this 6-week Learning Community series we will explore and discuss benefits, actionable strategies, and challenges to implementing Open Pedagogy, including socially-just pedagogical approaches. Shared discussions, implementation strategies, and resources from these sessions will be used to build and create new curated materials to provide you success strategies as you move beyond this workshop. In the true spirit of Open, registration to participate in this Learning Community is free and all are welcome to join. However, registration is required to ensure that you have access to all of the session materials and resources. We will meet Wednesdays 2:00-3:30pm EST / 11:00am-12:30pm PST from Oct 5 to Nov 9. Please register by October 3rd to ensure you have access to all materials for the workshops.

RIOS Learning Community: Difficult dialogues of social inequities in STEM classrooms
Facilitators: Desiree Forsythe (Chapman University) and Meg Jones (University of Rhode Island)
Instructors engaging students in diverse STEM content should possess the language and tools to enact difficult dialogues. It is simply not enough to provide instructors with diversified STEM course materials, it is also important for the instructors themselves to be comfortable with the scholarship pertaining to marginalization as it provides the appropriate framing and contextualization for those materials. In this 5-session learning community, we explore the basis of, and need for, dialogic approaches and, using STEM content, demonstrate ways in which students and instructors can experience formative examples of equity-minded discourse and practice. We will meet 12:00-1:30pm EST / 9:00-10:30 am PST on 10/12, 10/26, 11/9, 11/23, and 12/7. Applications are due by October 3rd. Participation in this learning community may be limited depending on the number of applicants.
